Syria has severed diplomatic ties with Ukraine, the nation’s authorities stated Wednesday.

The information follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s announcement that his authorities was reducing diplomatic relations with Syria in June.

“The Syrian Arab Republic has determined to interrupt diplomatic relations with Ukraine in conformity with the precept of reciprocity and in response to the choice of the Ukrainian authorities,” state information company SANA reported, quoting an unnamed official on the Ministry of Overseas Affairs and Expatriates.

Zelensky introduced the severing of diplomatic ties with President Bashar al-Assad’s authorities after Damascus acknowledged the independence of the 2 Russian-backed separatist republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, positioned within the Donbas area in japanese Ukraine.

Syria was the primary nation, after its shut ally Russia, to acknowledge the independence of the breakaway areas and state its intention to construct diplomatic relations with them final month.

The Syrian authorities has relied on Russian help for over a decade, with Moscow shielding the nation within the Safety Council and flooding it with weapons, personnel, and operational help.

Russia started a navy operation in Syria to prop up the Assad regime six years earlier than its invasion of Ukraine.

In 2018, Assad’s authorities acknowledged two different Russian-backed separatist republics, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, that are internationally acknowledged as a part of Georgia.
