TL;DR
Google announced on October 28 that ads in its conversational AI Mode are expanding to 10 more countries, with Brazil, Mexico and the UK planned later in 2026. US users will also see ads in AI Mode follow-up questions. Google says ads are labeled “Sponsored,” while an independent working paper found AI Overviews reduced website clicks in an experiment; that study did not find a measurable change in ad clicks.
Google said on October 28 it will expand ads in its conversational AI Mode to 10 more countries and begin showing them in US follow-up questions, extending advertising from conventional search results into AI-led conversations. The expansion comes as Alphabet reported 12% year-over-year growth in Google Search and other revenue for the third quarter, down from 17% in the previous quarter; the company cited several factors, including lower monetization of AI Mode searches.
The new AI Mode markets are Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Google said Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. In the United States, ads are also being introduced in responses to follow-up questions, so an ad may appear later in a back-and-forth exchange, not just after a user’s opening query.
Google’s advertising help materials say existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can serve in these placements. Advertisers do not receive a separate targeting control or an opt-out for AI Mode placements, according to those materials. Performance reporting is aggregated, and Google may generate short ad explainers that advertisers cannot edit. Google says ads in AI answers are labeled “Sponsored” and do not affect the answer generated by its AI.
Google’s claim that ad click-through rates are already similar to those of unpaid product listings in AI Mode is based on the company’s internal US data for August 20 to September 3, 2026, as described in its announcement. That comparison concerns product-listing clicks within AI Mode; it does not establish whether AI answers change clicks to publishers’ websites. The distinction matters because website traffic and ad performance are different measures.

Q2 to Q3 2026: about +0.1%. Same months a year earlier: about +4.4% (my arithmetic). Google names exchange rates as the largest driver of the slowdown, and the “lower monetization” of AI Mode as one factor.

Ads Follow Users Into AI Chats
Adding ads to follow-up questions places commercial messages within a search format that can feel more like a conversation than a list of links. For advertisers, the change offers access to users asking detailed questions, but the available controls are limited: campaigns may appear automatically, with no separate AI Mode opt-out and reporting provided in aggregate. Google’s AI-generated explanations also give advertisers less direct control over the words displayed alongside their ads.
For users, the practical distinction is between an AI-generated answer and a paid placement marked “Sponsored.” Google says the label will appear and that advertising does not influence the answer. That separation is a company statement, however, not a finding established by the announcement. Publishers have a separate concern: if an AI response answers a query without sending people to outside sites, advertising could remain visible while referral traffic changes. The available evidence does not show that the experiment described below applies directly to ads in AI Mode.
The rollout also has a business dimension. Google Search and other generated $63.4 billion in the third quarter, according to Alphabet, but its growth rate slowed. Chief business officer Philipp Schindler said lower monetization of fast-growing AI Mode queries affected results. Expanding ads may help Google earn more from those searches, though the company has not disclosed the revenue impact of this particular rollout.

From AI Overviews to Follow-Ups
Google has been adding advertising to AI search features in stages. Ads in AI Overviews—summaries shown within regular search results—began appearing for US mobile users in October 2024 and expanded to desktop in May 2025. Google also began testing ads in AI Mode in 2025. AI Mode is a separate, chat-style search experience where people can ask longer questions and continue with follow-ups.
At its May 2026 Marketing Live event, Google described tests of formats including Conversational Discovery ads, with ad text tailored to a user’s question, and “Highlighted Answers,” which can place an ad within AI recommendations. The October announcement adds new countries and US multiturn placements. Google’s statement that AI Mode questions are, on average, three times longer than conventional searches is a company-provided metric, not an independent assessment.
The timing has drawn attention because of Alphabet’s earnings report. Google Search and other revenue grew 12% year over year in July through September, after quarterly growth of 17%, 19% and 17% in the three preceding reported quarters. Schindler said exchange rates were the largest factor affecting growth and also cited changes in some retail and media spending. He separately said strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because those searches had lower monetization. The figures show the slowdown; they do not establish that the new ad placements will reverse it.
A 2026 working paper by Agarwal and Sen offers a separate measure of possible effects on web traffic. In a randomized experiment with 1,065 US users, AI Overviews reduced clicks to websites by 39.8% when they appeared, while the researchers reported no measurable change in clicks on ads. The study concerns AI Overviews, not the newly expanded AI Mode ads, and is a working paper rather than a peer-reviewed finding. Its results should not be treated as a direct forecast for this rollout.
“The strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode.”
— Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, on Alphabet’s earnings call
What the Rollout Cannot Yet Show
Google has not disclosed how much revenue the new placements are expected to generate, or how much they already contribute. It also has not published a full breakdown of advertiser performance by AI Mode placement. Because campaigns participate through existing products and reporting is aggregated, advertisers may have limited ability to isolate results from these conversational placements.
The company says ads do not shape the AI-generated answer, but the source material provides no independent audit of that claim. It also remains unclear how users will respond to ads appearing in follow-up questions, whether the format will change click patterns, and whether the website-click findings from the AI Overviews working paper apply at all to AI Mode.
As of October 29, Google’s listed rollout covers 12 countries for ads in AI answers, with the service described as English-only. Germany and other European Union countries are not on the list. The planned fourth-quarter expansion to Brazil, Mexico and the UK is an announced plan, not confirmation that the rollout has already occurred.
Rollout and Performance Data Ahead
Google says ads are rolling out in the 10 newly named markets and in US AI Mode follow-ups. The company has said Brazil, Mexico and the UK are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026; it has not provided a more specific launch date in the supplied material. Advertisers and users will be able to see how the placements appear as they become available, but Google’s aggregate reporting may make their individual effects difficult to separate.
The next useful evidence will include updates to Google’s country and product documentation, any further disclosure about ad performance, and independent research on user behavior in AI Mode itself. Alphabet’s subsequent earnings reports may show whether monetization of AI searches is changing, though they are unlikely on their own to isolate the effect of these particular placements. Until then, Google’s rollout plans and policy statements are confirmed; the financial and traffic effects remain open questions.
Key Questions
Where is Google expanding ads in AI Mode?
Google named 10 new markets: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. It said Brazil, Mexico and the UK are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
Will ads appear in US AI Mode follow-up questions?
Yes. Google announced ads for follow-up queries in US AI Mode, allowing ads to appear later in a conversation as well as after an initial question.
Can advertisers opt out of AI Mode placements?
Google’s advertising help materials say existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can serve in these placements, with no separate opt-out or targeting control. Reporting is aggregated.
How will users identify an ad in an AI answer?
Google says ads will carry a “Sponsored” label. The company also says ads do not influence the AI’s answer, but the supplied material includes no independent audit of that claim.
Does research show AI search ads reduce website clicks?
A 2026 working paper found that AI Overviews reduced website clicks by 39.8% in an experiment involving 1,065 US users, with no measurable change in ad clicks. It studied AI Overviews, not the new AI Mode placements, so it does not directly establish their effect.
